The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Commanders reached some 60 spots for Gavin Bartholomew, and value like that does not grow back. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The Dumas-Johnson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and running back. That Suamataia pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A clean fit for the roster.
They jumped the gun on Cooper DeJean, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Jordan Morgan in the 44th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 71 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Mohamed Kamara in slot 100, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nothing to complain about; Payton Wilson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 119 on Jamon Dumas-Johnson with quarterback and running back unsolved.
They paid a round early for Mike Sainristil in Round 5, Pick 8, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Jacob Cowing in slot 185, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Omar Speights in the 197th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A reach for Caden Prieskorn in the 211th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Gavin Bartholomew at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
