Boards are made to be trusted, and the Commanders shredded theirs for Blake Watson. He came off 118 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Commanders indulged a want in McKinstry while a need in cornerback, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
They bypassed pressing needs at cornerback, quarterback and other spots to take Kool-Aid McKinstry, a defensive back that was not the priority.
They paid up for Jordan Morgan at Round 2, Pick 4 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nothing to complain about; JT Tuimoloau went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
James Williams in pick 100 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No drama and no debate, Junior Colson went about where he belonged in No. 107. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They reached a country mile for Ben Sinnott at the 144th pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jacob Cowing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Blake Watson at Round 7, Pick 8, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
