Washington Commanders

The Commanders did enough to get by: C+.

The Commanders looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Omar Speights at pick 185 regardless, 37 picks early. The final tally is a middling C+.

However the rest shakes out, Mitchell at that price is a win they earned. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

Tight end was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Hit on Ja'Tavion Sanders and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.20 · Pick 20 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 26
In No. 20 they get a matchup weapon at tight end. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 55
Cooper DeJean in the 36th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 52
Kris Jenkins in Round 2, Pick 7 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 51
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in slot 52; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 86
They paid a round early for Zak Zinter in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 75
Quinyon Mitchell in pick 100 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Danny Stutsman · LB · rank 104
A reasonable price with a little left over, Danny Stutsman in the 107th overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 139
A clean, defensible pick in the 144th pick with a little surplus value in Cole Bishop. A minor itch, scratched.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Omar Speights · LB · rank 222
Omar Speights at slot 185 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Landon Jackson · DL-EDGE · rank 229
A straight-up fair deal on Landon Jackson at pick No. 228, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · J.J. Weaver · LB-EDGE · rank 274
They reached into another round for J.J. Weaver, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
