Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Cam Hart, the No. 172 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 228. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They will answer for taking linebacker early while quarterback and running back went begging. The cost of the Bolden reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get a mismatch in the passing game, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamari Lassiter. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took T.J. Tampa at par in pick No. 39, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Rod Moore at the 71st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They jumped the gun on Nazir Stackhouse, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They went early on Junior Colson in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 107 on Tommy Eichenberg with quarterback and running back unsolved.
Tyler Guyton in No. 144 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Adams at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Joshua Gray at pick 194, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Cam Hart still on the board at pick No. 228. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in the 232nd overall pick, where Landon Jackson graded well above the range. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Silas Bolden at slot 255, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Gavin Bartholomew at Round 7, Pick 36 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
