The Commanders looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Amarius Mims at Round 1, Pick 24 regardless, 59 picks early. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. Spending an early pick on defensive back with wide receiver, tight end and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Amarius Mims at the 24th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A surprising call. With wide receiver, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent slot 36 on Terrion Arnold, a defensive back they were not short of.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose defensive back. T.J. Tampa in pick 39 leaves wide receiver, tight end and other spots for later.
They talked themselves into Graham Barton at No. 53, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Adisa Isaac. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid up for Junior Colson at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid a round early for Mohamed Kamara in the 107th pick, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Cameron Ward at No. 144 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
