Washington Commanders

The Commanders worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

The Commanders looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Blake Watson at the Round 7 slot regardless, 98 picks early. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.

The Sainristil pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.

It is not that Eichenberg is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Jared Verse · DE-EDGE · rank 21
In the 14th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · T'Vondre Sweat · DL · rank 29
T'Vondre Sweat at the 36th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 54
The board had cheaper options than Cooper DeJean at pick No. 39, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 45
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Morgan at No. 44, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 84
They paid a round early for Marist Liufau in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 124
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver and quarterback to take Tommy Eichenberg, a linebacker that was not the priority.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 145
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Ty'Ron Hopper adds a linebacker while wide receiver and quarterback keeps waiting.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 98
Value with a capital V on Dominick Puni in the 112th overall pick, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Dallin Holker · TE · rank 158
They jumped the gun on Dallin Holker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 151
They robbed the room for Mike Sainristil here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Landon Jackson · DL-EDGE · rank 220
They read the board right and Landon Jackson was the payoff at pick 228. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.15 · Pick 235 · Blake Watson · RB · rank 333
A real head-scratcher, Blake Watson in Round 7, Pick 15 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
