Washington Commanders

A masterclass at the trade table lands the Commanders a B.

The Commanders looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Cole Bishop at the 100th overall pick regardless, 39 picks early. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Cowing. The phones were where this weekend was really won. It is not that Tampa is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.

That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · JT Tuimoloau · DE-EDGE · rank 31
In pick 26 they get a premier pass rusher. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · T.J. Tampa · DB · rank 40
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end, cornerback and other spots to take T.J. Tampa, a defensive back that was not the priority.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Quinn Ewers · QB · rank 39
They paid sticker price for Quinn Ewers in slot 39, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 102
A real head-scratcher, Payton Wilson in pick No. 71 is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 112
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Junior Colson adds a linebacker and leaves tight end, cornerback and other spots untouched.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 139
Cole Bishop at the 100th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 119
Troy Fautanu at pick 107 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Mike Sainristil · DB · rank 158
Mike Sainristil at slot 144 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Brandon Coleman · OL · rank 210
A wild overpay on Brandon Coleman in pick No. 180, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Devin Neal · RB · rank 186
Devin Neal at the 185th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 192
They robbed the room for Jacob Cowing here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
