After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Whittington has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
That Dixon pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Troy Fautanu at pick No. 36 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Ja'Tavion Sanders, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the Round 3 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They did well to land Zak Zinter in pick 100, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good price on Blake Fisher in the 102nd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They read the board right and Johnny Dixon was the payoff at No. 141. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had cheaper options than De'Corian Clark at the 181st pick, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Jordan Whittington at slot 223, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
