Washington Commanders

The Commanders worked the phones like thieves and earned a B.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Evan Williams at Round 7, Pick 8 is 75 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. The Wilson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots.

The Suamataia pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.32 · Pick 32 · JT Tuimoloau · DE-EDGE · rank 33
In No. 32 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 50
A reach for Jordan Morgan in the 34th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 43
By-the-book stuff, T.J. Tampa at pick 36 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 42
No drama and no debate, Troy Fautanu went about where he belonged in the 39th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.19 · Pick 51 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 61
Cooper DeJean in slot 51 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 57
Kingsley Suamataia is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 122
Junior Colson in slot 100 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 146
A curious use of pick No. 107. Wide receiver, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Payton Wilson did not.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 138
Cade Stover in the 144th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.11 · Pick 147 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 164
The board had cheaper options than Ben Sinnott at the Round 5 slot, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 175
A slide stopped in No. 185, with Ty'Ron Hopper worth more than the price. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Evan Williams · S · rank 303
They left a pile of value on the table to take Evan Williams this early at pick 228. A minor need, but a need all the same.
