The Patriots spent real capital to be 44 picks early on Jamaree Caldwell, and the board is going to hold them to it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Patriots indulged a want in Lawson while a need in edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots stayed open. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Landing Lawson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
They read the board right and Jalon Walker was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Malachi Moore at the 69th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Darien Porter at pick 77 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A curious use of slot 105. Edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Deontae Lawson did not.
A quiet steal in the 217th overall pick: Trevor Etienne for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and DJ Campbell at the 220th overall pick is the proof. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jamaree Caldwell at slot 241 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
