The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Packers watched Smael Mondon Jr. slide 97 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If Taylor pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd pick they get an every-down engine for the run game. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They let Tyler Booker come to them and pounced at slot 54. The roster fit checks out.
Mason Taylor at pick No. 87 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tez Johnson at the 122nd overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Barrett Carter in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They barely believed it either: Smael Mondon Jr. still on the board at No. 196. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Taking Jordan Hancock in pick 237 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They will replay Jack Kiser at Round 7, Pick 34 for years; that is how good the value is. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
