The trade table was where it all came apart. The Cowboys shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
Wilson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
If Weaver pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Zach Frazier in pick No. 64 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Payton Wilson in Round 3, Pick 24 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Audric Estime at par in slot 95, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Marist Liufau at the Round 3 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
James Williams in the 124th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in the 132nd pick, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Isaiah Davis in slot 174, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had cheaper options than J.J. Weaver at No. 212, and it noticed. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Eric Gentry in pick 245 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
