The Cowboys did not so much draft Zion Logue as overpay for him, 42 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick No. 24 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In No. 27 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid up for Jonathon Brooks at the 35th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
They jumped the gun on Jeremiah Trotter Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Mike Sainristil at pick 77 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Christian Mahogany in the 87th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had cheaper options than Jalen McMillan at the 90th pick, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good price on Zak Zinter in pick No. 112, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Xavier Thomas well ahead of where he belonged. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They read the board right and Kalen King was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 12. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A slide stopped in the Round 5 slot, with Tykee Smith worth more than the price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They went early on Curtis Jacobs in No. 186, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid a round early for Frank Gore Jr. in pick 216, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
JD Bertrand at pick 233 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Zion Logue at No. 244 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
