Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Adonai Mitchell, the No. 32 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 4, Pick 4.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. If Jones pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Caleb Williams in slot 3 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
They barely believed it either: Dallas Turner still on the board at pick 34. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They went early on Christian Mahogany in Round 3, Pick 4, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Adonai Mitchell at slot 104 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A slide stopped in the Round 4 slot, with Darius Robinson worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on Christian Jones in pick No. 182, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow AJ Barner was still sitting there in pick 229, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
