The Christian Jones selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 26 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. However the rest shakes out, Mims at that price is a win they earned.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Amarius Mims in pick No. 34. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They went early on Christian Mahogany in slot 68, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A premium they did not need to pay, Darius Robinson a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Luke McCaffrey at pick 136, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Christian Jones at the 182nd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Josh Wallace at pick 229 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
