The Patriots ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
If Robinson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Jones.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, J.J. McCarthy and all.
Pick-by-Pick
J.J. McCarthy in the 34th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 68 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
A premium they did not need to pay, Darius Robinson a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Luke McCaffrey in pick 136, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Christian Jones in No. 229 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
