The Christian Jones selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 28 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
Landing Tracy Jr. that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
A premium they did not need to pay, J.J. McCarthy a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had cheaper options than Christian Mahogany at pick 68, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
Darius Robinson in pick No. 104 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Luke McCaffrey. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Christian Jones at slot 182 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the 229th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
