The rest of the league had time to spare on Christian Jones; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 74 spots ahead at Round 4, Pick 36. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
Joe Alt in the 3rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Graham Barton at pick No. 34 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
They liked Christian Mahogany enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 68. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Luke McCaffrey in the 104th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Christian Jones in slot 136 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyrone Tracy Jr.. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Isaac Guerendo at slot 229 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
