You build a draft on nights like this. Elijah Jones had no business being available in the 229th pick, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
McCaffrey has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Adding Rashawn Slater by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Amarius Mims slid further than he should have, and No. 34 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Javon Bullard at the 68th overall pick is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Johnny Wilson in Round 4, Pick 4 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Luke McCaffrey at slot 136 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Kitan Oladapo in pick No. 182 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Elijah Jones at pick 229 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
