The trade table was a mismatch, and the Patriots were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
The McCaffrey pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
In the 27th overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They took J.J. McCarthy at par in pick 34, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Christian Mahogany went about where he belonged in pick No. 90. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Johnny Wilson in Round 4, Pick 4 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Christian Jones in No. 136 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Luke McCaffrey in slot 137, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Isaac Guerendo at the Round 6 slot is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
