The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Brenden Rice, the No. 95 name on the board, in pick No. 183.
The cost of the Mahogany reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick-by-Pick
Circle this one: Rome Odunze at slot 34 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Amarius Mims still on the board at pick No. 47. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Christian Mahogany. The roster fit checks out.
Tyler Nubin at pick 104 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Trey Benson at the Round 4 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
Luke McCaffrey in the 182nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Brenden Rice in Round 6, Pick 8 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
