Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
If Ezirim pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Barton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Jonathon Brooks at pick 34 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Graham Barton all the way to No. 68, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trey Benson in pick No. 104. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Christian Jones in the 136th pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Luke McCaffrey in slot 182 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Josiah Ezirim well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
