The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
Every board in the league had Ezirim lower, and that gap is the story. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The McCaffrey pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th overall pick they get a franchise quarterback, though they paid up to get him.
Quinyon Mitchell slipping to the 34th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Javon Bullard at pick 62 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jaylen Wright at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nothing to complain about; Christian Mahogany went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Johnny Wilson at No. 136 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 182 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Josiah Ezirim in Round 7, Pick 9 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
