The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Cornelius Johnson, the No. 187 name on the board, in the Round 7 slot.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They are betting Mahogany proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Bo Nix went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A big swing on Christian Mahogany at the 68th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Good price on Trey Benson in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Johnny Wilson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Luke McCaffrey well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Elijah Jones at pick 179 that the board grades a round light. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Cornelius Johnson at No. 225 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jordan Magee at No. 231 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
