They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Caleb Williams is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop.
The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Every board in the league had Mahogany lower, and that gap is the story.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Caleb Williams in No. 3 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Laiatu Latu in slot 34, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wild overpay on Christian Mahogany in pick No. 68, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy little value on Trey Benson in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Christian Jones at the 136th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Luke McCaffrey at pick 179. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Elijah Jones was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 11, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
