The Patriots ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The Wright reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The McCaffrey pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
The veteran additions, Bernhard Raimann chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 8 they get protection for the quarterback, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
J.J. McCarthy at No. 34 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaylen Wright at the Round 2 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nothing to complain about; Trey Benson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Johnny Wilson slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 36 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Luke McCaffrey slipping to the 179th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on Jordan Magee at the 231st pick that the board grades a round light. A minor need, but a need all the same.
