Call it larceny. Tyler Davis sat on the board until the 180th pick, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Every board in the league had Wilson lower, and that gap is the story.
The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Zion Johnson leading the way.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 7 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Brian Thomas Jr. slipping to the 34th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Amarius Mims in Round 3, Pick 4, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
You do not let a quarterback like Bo Nix reach No. 69 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Johnny Wilson at slot 103 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Luke McCaffrey in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Tyler Davis in the 180th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Circle this one: Kamal Hadden at pick No. 193 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid sticker price for Jordan Magee in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Garret Greenfield in pick No. 231. A need, and now a little less of one.
