After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Every board in the league had Dial lower, and that gap is the story. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Murphy II.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 27th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
They let Byron Murphy II come to them and pounced at slot 34. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at the 68th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Malik Washington worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. in Round 4, Pick 3 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Sataoa Laumea well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on Tip Reiman in pick No. 181, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid a round early for Kimani Vidal in the 193rd overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Trey Taylor at the Round 7 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached into another round for Marcellas Dial, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
