There is reaching, and then there is Raheim Sanders at No. 99. The Patriots jumped the board by 36 and dared it to prove them wrong. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. McMillan at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptive interior force. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Circle this one: Tetairoa McMillan at pick 35 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took TreVeyon Henderson at par in the 47th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Anthony Belton a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaeden Roberts in the 79th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Raheim Sanders in slot 99, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tahj Brooks in pick No. 131 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Tyler Van Dyke went about where he belonged in slot 195. The roster fit checks out.
