Call it larceny. Ashton Gillotte sat on the board until pick No. 194, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In the end it comes back to Travis Hunter, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
They barely believed it either: Travis Hunter still on the board at the 27th pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board fumbled Malaki Starks all the way to slot 34, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Kenneth Grant at the 53rd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Colston Loveland in Round 2, Pick 27 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Oscar Delp in pick 125, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Somehow Sonny Styles was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A edge rusher of that caliber at pick No. 194 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
