Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Colston Loveland, the No. 17 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 81. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
They will replay Malaki Starks at slot 34 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kenneth Grant in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A tight end of that caliber at pick No. 81 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Aireontae Ersery slipping to the 130th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
