The Patriots did not so much draft Dontay Corleone as overpay for him, 92 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Getting Felton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
They liked Colston Loveland enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 53. The roster fit checks out.
Abdul Carter in pick No. 72 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Tai Felton at Round 3, Pick 20 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Aireontae Ersery in pick 85 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tyler Warren at No. 108 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Mykel Williams, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jayden Higgins in pick No. 216 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, Omari Thomas in slot 218 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached a country mile for Dontay Corleone at pick 228, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
