The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Jayden Higgins, 57 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety.
The Amarius Mims deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
In slot 24 they get a security blanket over the middle, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Deone Walker at pick No. 41 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kenneth Grant at pick 72 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Abdul Carter. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Aireontae Ersery in the 108th pick, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jihaad Campbell at the 110th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A real head-scratcher, Mykel Williams in slot 144 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Terrance Ferguson at pick 216, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jayden Higgins at No. 218 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Anthony Belton in pick No. 228; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
