The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Cam Ward, the No. 7 name on the board, sitting there at pick 228 like a gift left on the doorstep.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will need Ersery to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
