The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Dontay Corleone, taking him 100 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
They banked enough surplus on Coleman to cover a lot of smaller sins.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
James Pearce Jr. in pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Abdul Carter this early at pick No. 67. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Tyler Warren at No. 84, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nick Emmanwori in the 93rd overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nick Emmanwori slid further than he should have, and slot 94 is lovely value for the safety. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Aireontae Ersery at pick No. 103 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 19, where Shavon Revel Jr. graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They talked themselves into Anthony Belton at pick 139, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Jonah Coleman slipping to No. 163 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached into another round for Jayden Higgins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dontay Corleone in the Round 7 slot, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at slot 235 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaylin Noel at the 254th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
