New England Patriots

Nobody dealt better than the Patriots this weekend: B.

Nobody else had Thor Griffith anywhere near pick 235. The Patriots did, by 134 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Getting Rourke where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.1 · Pick 33 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 43
They paid a round early for Abdul Carter in pick 33, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 56
Colston Loveland in Round 2, Pick 10 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 103
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tyler Warren this early at the 52nd overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Kenneth Grant · DL · rank 68
By-the-book stuff, Kenneth Grant at the 67th pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Kevin Winston Jr. · S · rank 85
They took Kevin Winston Jr. at par in slot 83, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.22 · Pick 86 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 80
They did well to land Nick Emmanwori in pick No. 86, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.29 · Pick 93 · LT Overton · DE-EDGE · rank 162
They reached into another round for LT Overton, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 94
They read the board right and Elic Ayomanor was the payoff at No. 103. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.20 · Pick 121 · Benjamin Morrison · CB · rank 131
They went early on Benjamin Morrison in pick 121, and the value did not follow. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.27 · Pick 128 · DJ Campbell · OG · rank 133
A straight-up fair deal on DJ Campbell at Round 4, Pick 27, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.1 · Pick 139 · Anthony Belton · OT · rank 206
Anthony Belton in slot 139 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.3 · Pick 217 · Zane Durant · DT · rank 298
They reached a country mile for Zane Durant at pick No. 217, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.6 · Pick 220 · Kurtis Rourke · QB · rank 196
They barely believed it either: Kurtis Rourke still on the board at the Round 7 slot. The roster fit checks out.
R7.21 · Pick 235 · Thor Griffith · DL · rank 369
This one needs a full-page explanation: Thor Griffith in the 235th overall pick, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
