The Thor Griffith pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 156 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
Getting Allar where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
They went early on Abdul Carter in pick 33, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Colston Loveland at par in pick No. 59, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
They talked themselves into Tyler Warren at the Round 2 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Donovan Ezeiruaku a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 68 with a little surplus value in Aireontae Ersery. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They liked Harold Fannin Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 22. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, DeMonte Capehart in Round 3, Pick 29 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A big swing on LT Overton at the 103rd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Benjamin Morrison in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Fair-plus on Jihaad Campbell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Anthony Belton this early at pick 139. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 140, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jonah Coleman at slot 141 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
You do not let a quarterback like Drew Allar reach the 168th overall pick and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Alfred Collins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Ar'maj Reed-Adams in Round 7, Pick 3 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Thor Griffith in the 220th pick says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylin Noel well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
