Nobody else had Tahj Brooks anywhere near pick No. 107. The Patriots did, by 64 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Deone Walker at slot 14 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Emery Jones at pick No. 35 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached into another round for Oscar Delp, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Earnest Greene III at the 75th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Andrew Mukuba in pick 94 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Hunter Wohler in the Round 4 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Tahj Brooks at the 107th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jasheen Davis this early at pick No. 131. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Chris Tyree in the 195th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
