The trade table was a mismatch, and the Patriots were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Sawyer. Oatis has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Josh Downs pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 30th pick they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Tyler Booker at pick 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in No. 45, with Omarion Hampton worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jack Sawyer in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Oscar Delp. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Anthony Belton was still sitting there in pick No. 99, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Fair-plus on Aireontae Ersery, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaheim Oatis in slot 195 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
