The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Mitchell Evans, the No. 48 name on the board, sitting there at No. 98 like a gift left on the doorstep.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Adding George Pickens by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Will Campbell at No. 14. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
In pick 26 they get a sticky cover corner, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
They took Emery Jones at par in the 34th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Colston Loveland at pick No. 35 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Quinshon Judkins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board fumbled Kenneth Grant all the way to slot 66, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let an edge rusher like Ashton Gillotte reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Mitchell Evans at Round 4, Pick 2 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
