Somebody in the Round 7 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Garrett Nussmeier, the No. 101 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The Michael Wilson deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Deone Walker in No. 34 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nic Scourton at pick 40 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tight end of that caliber at the 66th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Earnest Greene III at Round 4, Pick 2 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Sebastian Castro at pick No. 130 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Garrett Nussmeier at slot 194 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
