When a board-topper like Bryson Nesbit slides to the 194th overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The Van Jefferson deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 14 they get protection for the quarterback, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Nice patience on Colston Loveland, who had no business lasting to pick 34. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Emery Jones in No. 46 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Quinshon Judkins at the 66th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They barely believed it either: Kenneth Grant still on the board at slot 78. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Ashton Gillotte all the way to Round 4, Pick 2, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Earnest Greene III at the 130th pick for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Bryson Nesbit in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
