Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jabbar Muhammad got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at Round 7, Pick 2. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 14 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Malaki Starks at the 34th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Colston Loveland at pick 46 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Emery Jones at the 66th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for Mitchell Evans here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Ashton Gillotte all the way to Round 5, Pick 2, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tre Harris at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 194 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
