The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Travis Hunter, the No. 3 name on the board, sitting there at pick 58 like a gift left on the doorstep. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
In the 26th pick they get a ballhawk on the back end, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Colston Loveland at the 27th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Emery Jones went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 2. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quinshon Judkins at No. 39 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board fumbled Travis Hunter all the way to pick No. 58, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They read the board right and Mitchell Evans was the payoff at pick 66. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A edge rusher of that caliber at slot 98 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Earnest Greene III at pick No. 130 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
