The Patriots did not so much draft Ricky White as overpay for him, 38 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
They jumped the gun on Tre Harris, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
TreVeyon Henderson at Round 2, Pick 14 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had cheaper options than Anthony Belton at pick 67, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ricky White in the 78th pick, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Raheim Sanders at slot 99, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid a round early for Andrew Mukuba in Round 5, Pick 3, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Tyler Van Dyke in the 195th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
