The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Tahj Brooks, 45 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They banked enough surplus on Mukuba to cover a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
A slide stopped in the 34th overall pick, with Abdul Carter worth more than the price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 66th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Aireontae Ersery, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tahj Brooks at pick No. 130 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Andrew Mukuba in No. 194, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
