Williams should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Tyleik Williams, the No. 27 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 58.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. Every board in the league had Oatis lower, and that gap is the story.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Interior defensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 6
In pick 7 they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
R1.26 · Pick 26 · Emery Jones · OT · rank 33
They paid sticker price for Emery Jones in No. 26, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 37
Omarion Hampton in slot 34 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 35
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Booker. It fills a real need, too.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Tyleik Williams · DT · rank 27
Steal is underselling it; Tyleik Williams at the Round 2 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Xavier Nwankpa · S · rank 51
The board had Xavier Nwankpa higher than the 66th overall pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Oscar Delp · TE · rank 84
Oscar Delp in pick No. 72 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.2 · Pick 98 · Earnest Greene III · OG · rank 98
By-the-book stuff, Earnest Greene III at Round 4, Pick 2 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R5.2 · Pick 130 · Aireontae Ersery · OT · rank 127
Nothing to complain about; Aireontae Ersery went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.8 · Pick 136 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 153
They paid up for Andrew Mukuba at Round 5, Pick 8 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.8 · Pick 200 · Jaheim Oatis · DL · rank 229
They talked themselves into Jaheim Oatis at slot 200, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
