Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Patriots came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.
If Ersery pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Loveland pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 14 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 26th overall pick they get a featured back, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Emery Jones at slot 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Colston Loveland in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jonah Savaiinaea in pick 40 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A slide stopped in the 66th pick, with Mitchell Evans worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Earnest Greene III in No. 71, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Aireontae Ersery at Round 4, Pick 2, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Billy Bowman Jr. in pick 194. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
