The Patriots did not so much draft Jaheim Oatis as overpay for him, 35 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 6
Will Campbell slipping to the 14th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Emery Jones · OT · rank 33
By-the-book stuff, Emery Jones at pick 27 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R1.28 · Pick 28 · Malaki Starks · S · rank 16
In No. 28 they get a ballhawk on the back end at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Jonah Savaiinaea · OT · rank 39
A straight-up fair deal on Jonah Savaiinaea at the 34th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.13 · Pick 45 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 37
Nice patience on Omarion Hampton, who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 13. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Ashton Jeanty · RB · rank 48
Ashton Jeanty in pick No. 58 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Xavier Nwankpa · S · rank 51
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Xavier Nwankpa in slot 59. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Oscar Delp · TE · rank 84
Oscar Delp at Round 3, Pick 2 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Earnest Greene III · OG · rank 98
Earnest Greene III at the 82nd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.2 · Pick 98 · Aireontae Ersery · OT · rank 127
Aireontae Ersery at pick 98 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.2 · Pick 130 · Alfred Collins · DL · rank 163
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Alfred Collins. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.2 · Pick 194 · Jaheim Oatis · DL · rank 229
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaheim Oatis well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
