There is reaching, and then there is Chris Tyree at the 195th overall pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 33 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Ayomanor at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
So much rides on Emery Jones that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a cornerstone up front, a steep price for the projection.
Tyler Booker at slot 36 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Elic Ayomanor is a better player than the 67th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Value said wait; Raheim Sanders in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tahj Brooks this early at No. 131. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Andrew Mukuba in pick No. 136, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Chris Tyree at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
